Something about leading drunk horses... to the bar?

The other day, I received this question:

"Hey, glad to find your account - you make great content. Since I'm serious about learning copywriting properly, I'd like to work with a mentor to avoid common mistakes. As my native language is German, I wanted to ask if you know any German-speaking mentors in the field of copywriting and if you could recommend someone."

To which I replied that I didn't know any German-speaking coaches off the top of my head, but that I'd put the word out and pass on the details if I found anyone I'd recommend.

Our budding copywriter thanked me and went on his merry way.

A few days later, he got back in touch:

"Hey James, I want to teach myself the basics of copywriting first. Do you have any tips on how to learn it in practice, besides just reading books?"

Oh brother.

My response:

"My tip would be to start writing already. Want to write social content? Write social content. Want to write emails? Write emails. Your writing will be bad at first, but the more you write, the better you will get. The more you write, the more you will want to research how to improve. Or you could just pay for a course or a coach, skip all the long, boring, difficult work, and learn the basics much faster."

Since then, the guy has changed his username, profile picture, and bio three times... posted several lifestyle-porn style images that are clearly not his own…

And has written and posted a grand total of zero words.

Some aren't ready to be helped.

If you are ready and willing?
