The advantage to being the red-headed stepchild
Growing up, we moved around a fair bit.
It meant I went to more schools than most... and that I had to learn how to get good at making friends fast.
Later on, we moved out to the sticks, meaning my brothers and I had to get good at entertaining ourselves. You'll be shocked to learn that we got the internet in my early teens, so all entertainment before that was pure analogue and imagination.
Developing the skill of making friends fast meant that going to a different high school than all my friends wasn't too much of an issue. But it was the ability to be alone comfortably that has impacted my life in a very real way ever since.
You see, when you're in the in-group, you don't have enough of a vantage point to see things any differently from the rest of the pack. So, there's a very real advantage to cultivating a self-image that separates you from the herd.
Of course, I'm not just telling you childhood stories as cheap therapy. For those with eyes to see, even a simple story can reveal great lessons.
