The tale of the “emopreneur”

I first discovered this indie hacker about six months ago, marketing himself as the "emopreneur".

Every so often, he pops up on my FYP. Bear in mind the guy has 100,000+ followers - massive distribution. The first time he showed up was because he had a post go viral, whining about how he had just sold his car to extend his runway, was at $0 MRR, and would soon be homeless.

It boggled my mind. How can you have that much reach and not figure out a single way to monetise it?

But audience quality trumps audience quantity, and having a large audience doesn't mean you can solve problems people are willing to pay for. It doesn't mean you can build something people want to buy. Doesn't mean you can write what sells. Going viral doesn't mean you know how to run a business.

Fast forward to today - he popped up again. Turns out he's quit indie hacking altogether and is now working a sales job. Imagine that. 100,000+ followers and nothing to show for it. Couldn't monetise attention. Couldn't turn followers into dollars.

That's the reality for most of these people you see online. Even the ones with big audiences. They only know how to gain followers. They don't know how to make people reach for their wallets.

So if you're sitting there thinking 100,000 followers will solve all your problems - it won't. It'll solve distribution, but that's all.

Want to write copy that can make you sales at 100 or 100,000 followers?
