There's no such thing as dress rehearsals
Saw this post the other day:
“Your first 100 posts aren't for growing.
They're for getting good.”
Not egregious, but I'd like to go on record that it's more like 1,000 as a bare minimum…
But that's not the point of this email.
The comment I saw underneath this post is the point of this email:
“Same goes for first few clients as well.”
Whoa there, bucko… Pump the brakes.
Now don't get me wrong, your first few clients… you're gonna learn some shyt along the way. You're definitely going to be better after than before. But to treat them as practice? For "getting good"? I don't know about you, but that seems mighty disrespectful to those who have placed their trust in you when trust was hardest to place.
Your first few clients are the foundation for your credibility. When you had no experience, no testimonials, no jack shyt…
They took a chance on you anyway.
The lessons I learned working with my first clients were priceless, and I, for one, know that my copy quantum leapt as a result of them. But the reason for that was I wrote my ass off for them, even when I was sick, recovering from surgery, the works. I never once treated them like practice - I treated them as if they could make or break my business… because they could.
Your rep is the most precious asset you possess. Don't take a single gig lightly.
Want to learn some of the hard-earned copy secrets I had to figure out in the crucible of client work... without the pain?
